Oghuz Khagan

Uyghur · demigod · Uyghur traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Oghuz Khagan is the legendary world-conquering ancestor of the Turks, whose oldest surviving telling is the pre-Islamic Oγuz-nāma written in Uyghur script and preserved among the Turfan finds. Born of a barren mother after long waiting, he speaks at birth, drinks only his mother's milk, and grows in a single day; his blue face, fiery eyes and animal features mark him as more than mortal. He takes to wife a maiden who descends in a shaft of heavenly light and another found within a tree, and by them fathers the six sons Gün (Sun), Ay (Moon), Yulduz (Star), Kök (Sky), Taγ (Mountain) and Deŋiz (Sea). A sky-grey wolf sent from a beam of light guides his armies as he subdues the kingdoms of the world, which he then parts among his sons with a golden bow and three silver arrows, founding the order of the Oghuz tribes.
