Qorajon

Uzbek · mortal · Uzbek traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Qorajon is the great Kalmyk champion (pahlavan) of the Alpomish dastan who, encountering the hero on his bride-winning expedition, is turned from opponent into devoted friend and sworn brother. He becomes Alpomish's principal ally in Kalmyk country, tending the tulpar Boychibor through the perilous horse-race and standing by the hero against the other suitors. The friend-from-the-enemy-camp is a recurrent structural figure of Turkic heroic epic, and Qorajon is its classic Uzbek embodiment.
