Bakunawa

Visayan · numen · Visayan traditional religion; continuing · numen

Bakunawa is the great serpent-dragon of the sea in Visayan belief, the devourer of the moon. In the folk account the sky once held several moons, of which Bakunawa swallowed all but one, rising out of the waters to take them; the eclipse is its attempt upon the last. When the moon darkens, the people beat drums, gongs and cooking pots and shout, and make noise until the serpent releases it. Sources vary in describing the creature, some giving it the mouth and whiskers of a great fish or naga and a coiled, moon-bright body; its enmity is with the moon and, in some tellings, with the god who set the moon in the sky.
