Ogou Feray

Haitian Vodou · deity · Haitian Vodou traditional religion; continuing · deity

Ogou, most often invoked as Ogou Feray, is the warrior lwa of iron, fire, war, and worldly power, descended from the Yoruba (Nago) divinity Ògún. A soldier and a statesman, he embodies both martial force and political authority, and Vodou tradition strongly associates him with the generals and struggles of Haitian history. He appears in a red military uniform, brandishing a sabre or machete, drinking raw rum and smoking cigars, at once heroic protector and volatile, wounded veteran. Patron of smiths, soldiers, and all who work metal and fire, he is identified with Saint James the Greater, shown as a mounted crusader. He is numbered among the husbands of Ezili Freda. The name Ogou heads a whole family of related warrior lwa, of whom Ogou Feray is the most prominent.
