Mago is the ancestral father of the founding couple of Futuna's Alo tradition. Oral tradition recorded by Burrows relates that Mago and his wife Tafaleata came from Samoa, carried within a coconut, and settled at Alo; from them descend the war-god and first sau (paramount chief) Fakavelikele, whose title the paramount lineage of Alo, later renamed Tui Agaifo, still traces to itself. In the wider mythic genealogy Mago and Tafaleata are also named as parents of the protective goddess Finelasi and the nature-god Malafulafu. The narrative encodes the strong Samoan strand in Futunan origin traditions, distinct from the separate mythologies of Samoa itself.
