Jukurra-jukurra
Warlpiri · numen · Warlpiri traditional religion; continuing · numen
Jukurra-jukurra is the Morning Star, the planet Venus seen at dawn, and an ancestral man of the Jakamarra subsection. In the Seven Sisters Dreaming he is consumed with desire for the seven Napaljarri women, but the marriage law forbids a Jakamarra from taking a Napaljarri wife. Denied, he pursues the sisters ceaselessly, and it is his chase that finally drives them to become fire and flee into the sky. Warlpiri painters at Yuendumu show him rising each morning still in pursuit of the Pleiades, a sky drama that fixes the law of right and wrong marriage in the movement of the stars.
