Wife of Pryderi; daughter of Gwynn Gohoyw per the Third Branch genealogy. Central female figure of the Mabinogi Third Branch alongside Rhiannon. When the supernatural enchantment of Dyfed (caused by Llwyd ap Cilcoed in revenge for the Branch-1 wrong done to Gwawl) emptied the land of all its inhabitants except Cigfa, Pryderi, Manawydan, and Rhiannon, and when Pryderi and Rhiannon were subsequently transported to Llwyd's otherworld court leaving Cigfa and Manawydan as the only remaining inhabitants, Cigfa survived the difficult interregnum alongside Manawydan with notable strict-platonic-companionship — the medieval Welsh narrative explicitly emphasizes their honorable conduct, with Manawydan giving Cigfa explicit assurance of his fidelity to her absent husband Pryderi (his stepson). Less narratively-developed than Rhiannon in the Mabinogi tradition but structurally important as the second-female-figure-of-Branch-3 alongside Rhiannon and as the political-genealogical link continuing the Pwyll-Pryderi Dyfed dynastic line.
