Llŷr Llediaith

Welsh · mortal · mabinogion mythological · mortal

Father of the Branch-2 trio (Bendigeidfran, Branwen, Manawydan) by Penarddun; rationalized king-figure of the Welsh Mabinogion tradition. The epithet Llediaith ("Half-Speech") preserves alien-or-foreign-origin status, possibly reflecting the cognate-Irish-Lir-deity figure's reduction in the Welsh tradition into a mortal-king-class figure. The registry adopts the medieval-Welsh rationalized reading, treating Llŷr as mortal-class. By the time of the Branch-2 narrative he is dead; his son Bendigeidfran reigns as king of Britain. The Llŷr-cognate Irish sea-deity Lir is preserved in Irish tradition through his son Manannán mac Lir; the Welsh equivalent Manawydan fab Llŷr appears in Branch 2 and Branch 3 of the Mabinogi as the central figure of the Third Branch.
