Wiininwaa

Mortal woman; daughter of Nookomis (Grandmother). Mother of Wenabozho/Nanabozho and his brothers by E-bangishimog (West Wind). Dies in childbirth in most versions of the cycle, leaving Nookomis to raise the children. The "Winona" alt is the Dakota-derived "Wenonah" ("firstborn daughter") of the Schoolcraft (Algic Researches, 1839) → Longfellow (Hiawatha) tradition, attached to this Ojibwe figure in the popular literature; her authentically Ojibwe name is Wiininwaa ("nourishment").
