Nibek names the class of spirit-monster that stands at the summit of the Wogeo ceremonial order, its power invoked by headmen at the great interdistrict festivals. It belongs, with the lewa, to the second of the three Wogeo categories of supernatural beings, the spirit-monsters, ranked above the souls of the dead and below the world-shaping culture heroes. The nibek's voice is heard in the secret flutes won for men in the myth of Nat Karamwang, instruments women and the uninitiated may not see; its calling marks the most inclusive and prestigious gatherings of the island.
