Bobok

Yaqui (Yoeme) · numen · Yaqui (Yoeme) traditional religion; continuing · numen

Bobok is the toad of the lagoon Bahkwam, the site that is now the pueblo of Bacum. In a great drought the people chose him to go and beg rain from the King of the Rain. Borrowing wings from a bat-magician friend, Bobok flew up into the clouds, reached Yuku, and returned the rain to the parched land; rain fell everywhere and toads sprang up singing. His cry, kowak, kowak, is heard running over the surface of the rain, and Yaquis take the singing of toads as the sign of coming rain.
