Omteme, whose name means 'he is angry,' was the wise governor who dwelt on the hill called Omteme Kawi. Having learned from the talking tree that the Conquest was coming, he stood upon his height in fury as the invaders arrived by sea at Guaymas. When the conqueror fired a gun he answered, 'So you want war,' and loosed a single arrow that split the invader's mountain in two; then he descended into the heart of his own hill, as many of the people also withdrew into the mountains and the sea rather than accept the Conquest. Tellings that name the newcomer as Columbus preserve the collapse of distinct conquerors into a single figure of memory.
