Aje is money, and her mother is the sea, because that is where money came from. West African currency was the cowrie shell, imported across the Indian Ocean and landed on the coast in quantity, so a goddess of wealth who is Olokun's daughter is a plain statement of economic fact dressed as a genealogy. Her sign is the shell itself. The registry held Olokun and not the child.
