Amuniwaiye

The Olukoyisi story is told as legend and is recorded here as legend. What it is doing in the tradition is plain enough: a king who inherits a vendetta hires power he does not control, uses his rank on the household of the man who holds it, and is destroyed by the same power in a manner designed so that the whole city sees what he was doing when it happened. Oyo's political memory is full of this shape — the instrument a king reaches for turns in his hand — and the eighteenth century is where it stops being a story and starts being the constitution.
