Nanzagbe is the senior wife of the trickster Ture and a recurring figure in the Zande tales, where she serves as the domestic foil to her husband's schemes. In several stories she cooks the game he brings home, is deceived or shamed by his double-dealing, and in one much-repeated tale turns on Ture in fury when his own body betrays the incestuous and gluttonous acts he has tried to conceal. Through her the tales stage the tensions of the Zande household and the mutual obligations of marriage.
