Ngura

Zande · mortal · Zande traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Ngura is remembered as the great expanding monarch of the Avongara, a descendant of the clan's founder Basanginonga who, several generations after the dynasty's origin, consolidated Zande political order. Tradition credits him with the system of a single paramount served by appointed princes and governors, the framework under which the Zande kingdoms spread eastward across the Nile-Congo divide. His figure stands at the threshold between the legendary origin of the ruling clan and the documented history of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Zande kingdoms.
