Ayaraetã

Araweté · numen · Araweté traditional religion; continuing · numen

Ayaraetã, the 'father of honey,' is the celestial master of honey among the beings summoned by the Araweté shaman. His domain furnishes the sweetness that accompanies açaí in the offering directed to the devouring Iaraci, binding the two spirits within a single ritual gesture. As an owner-father figure he personifies the abundance of a coveted forest and sky substance, a benevolent counterpart to the hungrier cannibal powers of the celestial world.
