Iaraci

Araweté · numen · Araweté traditional religion; continuing · numen

Iaraci, the 'açaí eater,' is one of the named celestial cannibals of the Araweté sky, summoned into the village through the songs of the shaman. The living present it an offering of açaí pulp mixed with honey, held to be the most perilous of all Araweté food offerings precisely because the recipient is a devourer. Iaraci belongs to the register of hungry celestial powers that must be fed and placated, the cannibal appetite of the sky turned, for a moment, toward the fruits of the earth.
