Tsovinar
Armenian · mortal · medieval sasna tsrer · mortal
The sea-conceived matriarch of the Sassoun line in the Sasna Tsřer (Daredevils of Sassoun). A princess of Baghdad given in tribute-marriage, she conceives the twin founders Sanasar and Baghdasar by drinking sacred water from the Milky Fountain (Katnaghbiur), with no human father — the miraculous-conception motif that opens the four-generation epic. Her name (Armenian Tsovinar, "of the sea") and the older Armenian storm-and-sea spirit of the same name lie behind the marine conception.
