Acamapichtli

Acamapichtli was imported. The Mexica at this point were a client people on a swampy island paying tribute to Azcapotzalco, and what they wanted from a king was legitimacy — so they applied to Colhuacan, which had Toltec blood, and were given a man with it. Every later tlatoani is his descendant, and the dynasty's whole claim rests on that transaction. The codices cannot agree on when he reigned; the spread is forty years, which is a useful reminder about the precision of Mesoamerican regnal chronology before the fifteenth century.
