Huitzilihuitl

Aztec/Mexica · mortal · founding of tenochtitlan · mortal

Huitzilihuitl's achievement was a marriage. The Mexica were still paying tribute to Azcapotzalco and still building their city out of a marsh; he married the Tepanec lord's daughter, and the tribute came down, and Mexica traders got better access, and the island started to look like a city. It is unglamorous statecraft and it set up everything his sons did. He is also the father of both Moctezuma I and Tlacaelel, which makes him the origin of the most effective political partnership in Mexica history.
