Chimalpopoca

Aztec/Mexica · mortal · founding of tenochtitlan · mortal

Chimalpopoca died at the wrong end of somebody else's coup. Azcapotzalco's old lord died, the succession there turned violent, and the Mexica king — who was a grandson of the old lord and therefore a complication — ended up dead in Tepanec custody. The sources disagree about whether he was murdered, killed himself, or was removed by his own people to clear the way for a war party. Whatever happened, it gave Itzcoatl a casus belli, and within a few years Azcapotzalco was destroyed and the Mexica were nobody's clients.
