Macuilxochitl
Aztec/Mexica · deity · cosmogonic · deity
Macuilxochitl runs the games and collects on them. He heads the Ahuiateteo, the five gods of excess, whose function is the sharp edge on the pleasures his brother presides over: they send disease to people who overdo it, particularly in gambling and in sex. The Mexica did not separate the god who gives you the party from the god who gives you the consequences — they made them brothers, and gave the consequences a calendar name so you would know which day to watch.
