Pabil

Pabil is on the losing side of the clearest transaction in Ugaritic literature. Kirta has lost his whole family and is told by El in a dream to raise an army and march on Udum; he does; the city is surrounded for seven days; and Pabil sends out an offer of silver, gold, slaves and chariots — everything a besieging king would normally want. Kirta says no and names the one thing he came for: Hurraya. The poem is very clear that the war exists to produce an heir, not a profit.
