Syr is the youth of the origin myth who stands between the Ishir and the primordial spirit-beings. Favoured and protected by the scarlet Ashnuwerta, he is the first among the ancestors to learn the secret of the Anaposo, and through him the knowledge that the spirits could be killed passes to the people, setting in motion the slaying of the spirit-beings and the founding of the ceremony. He is remembered as a hunter and initiate whose transgression and instruction opened the mystery. Accounts vary in the details of his part and even in his name.
