White Dragon Horse
Chinese · deity · mythic · deity
He is a person and he is the luggage, and the novel never quite resolves which. Formal lists of the pilgrims give five — monk, monkey, pig, friar and horse — and he speaks and fights on the few occasions the plot needs him to, then goes back to being ridden for another thirty chapters. Including him is the difference between a party of four and the party the Chinese tradition actually enumerates.
