Sarpedon (Lycian)

Greek · demigod · heroic age · demigod

Half-Olympian son of Zeus by Laodamia; king of Lycia and co-leader of the Lycian contingent at Troy with his cousin Glaucus. Iliad 12.290-330 — his speech to Glaucus on the obligations of noble birth — is the foundational statement of heroic aristocracy in Greek literature. Killed by Patroclus; Zeus considered intervening to save him but yielded to Hera's argument that doing so would set the precedent. Sleep and Death (Hypnos and Thanatos) carried his body home to Lycia. The Euphronios krater depicts the Hypnos-Thanatos lifting.
