Jingū

Japanese · mortal · kofun · mortal

The overseas campaign attributed to her has been among the most politically loaded passages in the Japanese chronicles for a century and a half, and the record deliberately states only what the treatments consulted state: that the chronicles say she campaigned while pregnant and gave birth on her return. The historicity of the campaign, its date and its target are disputed and are not adjudicated here. Ōjin is not given a separate record because the corpus already holds him, deified, as Hachiman.
