Mortal-floor (5 generations from demigod Yoshiie; divine-line annotation preserved) third son of Yoshitomo. After his father's death in 1160 spared from execution and exiled to Izu for 20 years; in 1180 received Prince Mochihito's anti-Taira edict and raised the Minamoto banner. Established his base at Kamakura — the canonical-foundation of the Kamakura shogunate. Directed the Genpei War (1180-1185) from Kamakura while his brothers commanded the field-armies; final Taira defeat at Dan-no-ura 1185. Appointed first Sei-i Taishōgun in 1192 by Emperor Go-Toba — the canonical-foundational appointment establishing the Kamakura shogunate (1192-1333) and the dual-government structure (imperial court at Kyoto + warrior-shogunate at Kamakura) that persisted in some form through to 1868. Died 1199 from injuries sustained in a fall from his horse.
