Yoshitomo
Japanese · scion · late heian · scion
Scion-tier eldest son of Tameyoshi; Captain of the Left Imperial Stables. Fought on the winning Go-Shirakawa side at the Hōgen Rebellion 1156 against his own father; forced by imperial order to behead Tameyoshi. Led the Minamoto faction at the Heiji Disturbance of 1159 against Taira no Kiyomori; defeated and killed in Owari in 1160 by a treacherous host. His defeat ended Minamoto power in central Japan for ~20 years until his son Yoritomo's rise in 1180. Father of Yoritomo (founder of Kamakura shogunate) and Yoshitsune (the canonical tragic-hero of the Genpei War).
