The Sun, Osatch, is among the most exalted of the Keresan deities, addressed as father and greeted with cornmeal and prayer at daybreak. He crosses the sky as the giver of light, warmth, and life, and in the mythic narratives he is the father of the twin war gods Masewi and Oyoyewi, who make the perilous journey to his house in the east to be recognized as his sons and given the weapons and knowledge of their calling. He figures repeatedly in the Yellow Woman story cycle, where he carries off or marries Kochininako, and in several of these tales he is named as the sire of her offspring. His household in the east, guarded and hard to reach, is a recurring destination in the hero narratives.
