Oyoyewi

Keresan Pueblos · demigod · Keresan Pueblos traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Oyoyewi is the younger of the Keresan twin war gods, son of the Sun and inseparable companion of his elder brother Masewi. The two are almost always named together, and in ritual and governance the paired offices of the outside war captains of the pueblos take their names, Masewi for the elder and Oyoyewi for the younger. In the hero narratives he shares fully in the twins' exploits: the journey to the Sun their father, the winning of weapons, and the destruction of the monsters, giants, and the Gambler who prey upon the people. Where the twins differ in character he is the more impulsive and playful, foil to the graver Masewi, but the sources treat them chiefly as a single heroic pair.
