One Death is the senior of the two paramount lords of Xibalba, the K'iche' underworld, ruling alongside Seven Death over a hierarchy of disease-bearing demons with names such as Scab Stripper, Blood Gatherer, and Pus Master. It is One Death who takes offense at the ballplaying of One Hunahpu and Seven Hunahpu and summons them into a realm of deadly trials, engineering their defeat and sacrifice. When the Hero Twins descend a generation later, they see through the tricks of the underworld, survive its lethal houses, and finally persuade One Death and Seven Death to submit to being sacrificed with the promise of resurrection, then refuse to revive them, breaking the power of Xibalba over humankind.
