Hesuklistos

Lacandon · deity · Lacandon traditional religion; continuing · deity

Hesuklistos, the Lacandon rendering of Jesus Christ, is a minor deity assimilated to the indigenous pantheon as a son of Äkyantho', god of foreigners. Identified as the god of the Mexicans and other outsiders, he is assigned a slight and peripheral role in the cosmos, subordinate to the true gods of the forest. Sources differ on the extent of his integration, which reflects historical contact with Christian missions.
