Kivish Atakvish

Kivish Atakvish, a name rendered roughly as 'empty' or 'vacant', is the primordial emptiness that stands at the head of the Luiseno creation recorded by DuBois. In the esoteric cosmogony a series of such self-existent conditions succeed one another in the void, each named, until the emptiness brings forth Tukmit the Sky and Tamaayawut the Earth, the brother-sister pair whose union produces the ordered world. Sources differ on whether Kivish Atakvish is best understood as a personal maker-being or as a personification of the abstract primal void; the ethnographic texts, which preserve the names as a chanted genealogy of first things, leave the question open.
