Tukmit

Luiseno & Acjachemen (Juaneno) · deity · Luiseno & Acjachemen (Juaneno) traditional religion; continuing · deity

Tukmit, the Sky, is the male half of the primordial pair in the Luiseno creation recorded by DuBois. Brought forth out of the primal void by Kivish Atakvish, he and his sister Tomaiyowit, the Earth, lay together in the darkness, and in a long dialogue named and described all the things that were to be, so that by naming them they came into being: the mountains and rocks, the trees and plants, the animals and people. From their union was born Wiyot, the first captain, and the whole order of the world. Tukmit is conceived less as an anthropomorphic ruler than as the sky itself and the ordering intelligence that speaks the cosmos into shape.
