Demang Lebar Daun

Malay · mortal · Malay traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Demang Lebar Daun is the chief of Palembang who yields his throne to the newcome Sang Sapurba and gives his daughter Wan Sendari in marriage. Their exchange of solemn oaths is the charter of Malay kingship, cited throughout the Sejarah Melayu: that the ruler shall never put his subjects to shame however they offend, and that the subjects shall never commit treason against him however ill they are used, on pain that the breaking of the bond by the ruler will bring his house to ruin. The covenant frames the moral logic of every dynastic crisis in the chronicle.
