Sang Sapurba

Malay · demigod · Malay traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Sang Sapurba is the founder-ancestor of the Malay kings. With two companions he appears upon Bukit Seguntang above Palembang, where the ripening rice turns to grains of gold and leaves of silver and a white bull disgorges a herald proclaiming his descent from Raja Suran and Iskandar Zulkarnain. Acclaimed sovereign, he binds with the Palembang chief Demang Lebar Daun the foundational covenant, or waad, between ruler and ruled, and marries the chief's daughter Wan Sendari. His line carries daulat, a sacred sovereignty so charged that a subject who commits treason, derhaka, is destroyed by it; from him descends Sri Tri Buana and the whole dynasty of Malacca and Johor.
