Sang Nila Utama
Malay · quartigod · Malay traditional religion; continuing · quartigod
Styled Sri Tri Buana, 'Lord of the Three Worlds', Sang Nila Utama sails from Bintan to the island of Temasek, where a storm nearly founders his fleet until he casts his crown into the sea to appease it. Landing safely, he glimpses a swift strange beast, taken by his companions for a lion, and renames the island Singapura, the Lion City, founding the settlement whose sovereigns the Sejarah Melayu traces. Sources differ on whether he is the direct son or a more distant descendant of Sang Sapurba.
