Raja Suran is a world-conquering monarch of the Sejarah Melayu, reckoned a descendant of Iskandar Zulkarnain, the Islamic Alexander the Great. Marching through the peninsula in conquest, he has a chamber of glass constructed and is lowered to the floor of the ocean, where he reaches the submarine kingdom of Dika and weds the sea-princess Puteri Mahtabul Bahri, daughter of its ruler. Their union seeds the royal line that later manifests upon Bukit Seguntang at Palembang, making Raja Suran the deep ancestor of the Malacca and Johor dynasties. The name Chulan preserves a memory of the Chola conquerors of the Straits.
