Aóre Cha Cónhe

Maleku · deity · Maleku traditional religion; continuing · deity

Aóre Cha Cónhe, 'She of the Headwaters of Aóre', is one of the three principal Maleku gods named in the recorded cosmogony, alongside Nharíne Cha Cónhe and their daughter Jáfara. She is the second tócu to come into being and takes the source of the Río Aóre as her dwelling. In the narrative she becomes the consort of the creator Nharíne Cha Cónhe, and from their union is born Jáfara, to whom Nharíne grants the lagoons of Toro lhámi. Like the other tócu she belongs to the company of river-source deities whom each Maleku clan was bound to respect and venerate.
