Jáfara

Maleku · deity · Maleku traditional religion; continuing · deity

Jáfara is named among the three principal Maleku gods together with her parents, the creator Nharíne Cha Cónhe and Aóre Cha Cónhe. In the recorded cosmogony she is the daughter born of their union, and when Nharíne Cha Cónhe distributes the headwaters and waters of the Río Frío basin among the tócu, he grants to Jáfara the lagoons of Toro lhámi as her sacred seat. As a tócu of the waters she belongs to the company of deities each Maleku clan was bound to respect and venerate at its own river or lagoon.
