Wangbren

Manipuri · deity · mythic prehistoric · deity

Wangbren (Wangpulen / Wangpurel) is the Meitei god of water, rain, flood, disease and sickness — lord of the rivers and ruler of the under-water world — and one of the four cardinal Umang Lai of Sanamahism, the guardian of the south-eastern direction (the Maikei Ngakpa Lai). With Koubru, Thangjing and Marjing he completes the four-fold guardianship of the cardinal directions invoked in Meitei ritual to protect the land from disaster.
