Mungan is the woman whose apotheosis opens the Ulahingan. Stricken with a loathsome, incurable skin disease and left behind by her people, she is visited by the diwata, cured, and granted immortality, becoming the first of the community to escape death. From her the living learn of Nelendangan and the destiny of the undying, and her deliverance sets in motion the epic migration led by Agyu. Sources differ on her precise kinship: in the Livunganen-Arumanen recitation recorded by Maquiso she is the wife of Banlak, elder brother of Agyu, while other traditions place her differently within the family.
