Indarapatra

Maranao · mortal · Maranao traditional religion; continuing · mortal

In the widely told Mindanao legend, recorded among the Maranao and neighbouring Muslim peoples, Radia Indarapatra is the ruler of the kingdom of Mantapoli. He sends his brother Radia Sulayman to rid the land of four man-eating monsters that have emptied it of people. Keeping a living plant that will wither should his brother die, he sees it wilt and follows; he gathers Sulayman's scattered remains and revives him by prayer, sends him home, and himself destroys the surviving beasts. Afterward he discovers a maiden and the remnant of the people hidden in caves, and takes the maiden to wife. Maranao and Maguindanao versions share the tale, and sources differ on which community first preserved it.
