Segamai is a dreaded being of the deep forest in Matsigenka lore, described as a creature the size of a cow with dark matted fur and a long snout, walking on four legs or two, roaring terribly, impervious to arrows and bullets, and giving off a stench that stupefies whoever comes near. Ethnographers note its close resemblance to the mapinguari of wider Amazonian belief. The Matsigenka regard it with terror, and Glenn Shepard records it categorised among the matted-furred demons of their cosmology, one of the monstrous inhabitants of the forest ranged with the creatures of Kientibakori, even as it is spoken of alongside the ordinary but dangerous animals of the woods. Sources differ on whether it is best understood as a demon or as a rare and fearsome beast.
