Sihyaj Chan K'awiil II
Maya · mortal · classic · mortal
Stela 31 is the single most informative Maya monument about the fifth century, and it is his. It shows him flanked by two figures in Teotihuacan war costume, both of them his father, and its text runs the dynastic line back through the entrada and out the other side — the document in which a house installed by outsiders argues that it is the old house after all. He put it inside a building and it survived because of that.
