Siyaj K'ak'
Maya · mortal · classic · mortal
The entrada of 378 is the single most argued-over event in Maya archaeology, and the reason is the coincidence of dates: a foreign lord arrives at Tikal on the exact day the king dies, and within a year a new king is on the throne with Teotihuacan iconography all over his monuments. Whether it was a conquest, a coup with outside backing or a dynastic marriage dressed as an arrival is not settled and this record does not settle it — it gives the date, the coincidence and the attribution as the treatments give them. What is not in doubt is that Tikal was different afterwards.
