Ninlil

Mesopotamian · deity · mythic · deity

Ninlil is Lady Wind to Enlil's Lord Wind, and her absence from this registry was the most conspicuous of the missing consorts. The Sumerian myth Enlil and Ninlil is one of the strangest in the corpus: Enlil forces her by the river, is exiled to the underworld for it by the assembly of gods, and she follows him down, conceiving the moon god Nanna and then three underworld deities along the way as substitutes to buy Nanna's release. In Assyria she becomes Mullissu and is married to Ashur — the same transfer that moved Enlil's position to him. Herodotus's Mylitta is her name at one remove.
