Chàng Hồ Liêu, son of a Mường lord, is the hero of the narrative poem Út Lót – Hồ Liêu. On a long journey he is accompanied by Út Lót, who travels in the guise of a man in her father's stead, and he comes to love her. Barred by difference of rank and by the circumstances of their meeting, their love ends unhappily. Hồ Liêu's name survives paired with Út Lót's as one of the celebrated couples of Mường folk literature.
